2016 — current

Originally an experiment of wanting to make a still life with taxidermized birds and creatures, this evolved into a series where the main subject of the painting were native New Zealand birds. These native birds are a very popular in all circles as they represent a piece of New Zealand culture and are recognisable to almost everyone.

One of the key features of this series of work is to amplify the subject of the painting as much as possible. Most animals in this series are very brightly coloured and have some really interesting variations in colour that have evolved over thousands of years, so creating the paintings in this style allows the painting to take on an atmosphere of its own and makes the subject of the painting as strong as possible by highlighting the features that nature has given them.
